Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a municipal zoo and botanical garden located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It opened in 1937. Within the grounds, there are not only a zoo and botanical garden but also an amusement park, a natural animal museum, a world medaka museum, an petting zoo, and an observation deck called the Higashiyama Sky Tower. In addition to its convenient location just a few minutes' walk from the subway station, admission is free for junior high school students and younger, making it a popular spot for families.

Highlights of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens

We will introduce the highlights of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden opening hours, closing days, and admission fees

・The opening hours for Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens are from 9:00 AM to 4:50 PM (entry is allowed until 4:30 PM).
・The zoo and gardens are closed every Monday (if Monday is a holiday or a substitute holiday, then the following non-holiday) and during New Year's holidays (from December 29th to January 1st).
・The admission fee for both the zoo and botanical gardens is 500 yen for adults (high school students and above), and it's free for junior high school students and younger.
・The observation fee for the Higashiyama Sky Tower is 270 yen for adults (high school students and above), and free for junior high school students and younger.

The zoo and botanical gardens are interconnected, so once you've paid the admission fee, you can move freely between them. The Higashiyama Sky Tower is located outside of these premises, so it requires a separate fee. However, there's a combined ticket available for 640 yen that covers both the zoo and botanical gardens as well as the Higashiyama Sky Tower.

While the amusement park is located within the zoo's premises and doesn't require a separate entrance fee, there are additional charges for the rides.

Zoo Main Park

In the main area of the zoo, you can see animals such as Asian elephants, lions, penguins, polar bears, and koalas. In September 2013, the "Zorgium (Asian Elephant House)" opened, followed by the "Red Panda House" in March 2021. In July 2023, the new "Asian Tropical Rainforest Area (featuring the Sumatran Tiger House, Sumatran Orangutan House, and the Hornbill House)" was inaugurated.

The main zoo also has a "Petting Area" where you can see animals like goats and sheep up close, as well as the "Forest of Birds and Squirrels," where squirrels roam freely.

Zoo North Park

In the North Garden of the zoo, you can see Western Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Hippos, and Wolves, among others. The "Timber Wolf Enclosure" opened in April 2012, the "New Gorilla and Chimpanzee Enclosure" in September 2018, and the "New Jaguar Enclosure" is set to open in October 2024. Additionally, there is a "World Medaka Pavilion" where Medaka fish from around the world are collected and displayed.

Natural Animal Museum

In the Natural Animal Museum located within the North Garden of the zoo, you can see various types of crocodiles, as well as nocturnal animals like bats, amphibians such as salamanders and frogs, and reptiles including snakes and lizards.

Botanical Garden

The greenhouse at Higashiyama Botanical Garden is the oldest existing one in Japan and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Within its vast grounds, there are numerous plants left in their natural state, allowing visitors to enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in the fall. Higashiyama Sky Tower

Higashiyama Sky Tower, constructed in July 1989, is an observation tower standing at a height of 134 meters. However, as it's built atop an 80-meter hill, its elevation reaches 214 meters. From the observation rooms on the 4th and 5th floors, you can have a panoramic view of Nagoya city, and at night, you can marvel at the breathtaking city lights.

Higashiyama Boat House

There is a boat house by the Kami-Ike in Higashiyama Zoo. It offers rowboats and pedal boats. The rowboats can accommodate three people, while the pedal boats come in versions for three or four riders.
