Universal Studios Japan (commonly known as USJ) is a theme park located in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, which opened on March 31, 2001. The park is divided into 10 areas (as of 2023) and offers attractions and entertainment based on Hollywood's blockbuster movies. In addition, special events for seasons like Halloween and Christmas, as well as collaboration events with popular manga and anime, are also held.

In this article, we will explain the attractions of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka Prefecture and how to access it for those who are traveling to Japan from overseas.

Highlights of Universal Studios Japan

We will introduce the highlights of Universal Studios Japan.

USJ currently has 10 areas. "Hollywood Area" "New York Area" "Minion Park" "San Francisco Area" "Jurassic Park" "Amity Village" "WaterWorld" "Universal Wonderland" "THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER" , and "SUPER NINTENDO WORLD". I will introduce them in order.

From Universal City Station to the entrance gate

Follow the road from JR Universal City Station to the entrance gate of USJ and you will arrive in about 5 minutes. There are commercial facilities called "Universal City Walk Osaka" in between, and you can use restaurants, shops, convenience stores, pharmacies, etc.

First there is the main gate. There is one on the access side from Universal City Station and one on the access side from the official parking lot and bus terminal. After passing through the main gate, you will see a globe (Universal Globe) on the right side (when coming from Universal City Station).

The ticket booth is located beyond the main gate. If you buy tickets on the day, it may take time, so it is recommended to get them in advance. If you have a ticket, you can enter the park through the entrance gate after baggage inspection. Please note that the opening time may be earlier than the time listed on the official website by 30 minutes to 1 hour.

If you have an Early Park-In ticket, the entrance is on the far left of the entrance gate. Look for the red sign that says "EARLY PARK IN". If you forget your annual pass, you can have it reissued at the guest service on the left before entering the entrance gate.

The map near the entrance gate is as follows. The main gate on the upper right is on the parking lot side, and the main gate on the lower right is on the Universal City Station side.

Hollywood Area

The attractions in the Hollywood Area include "Space Fantasy - The Ride", "Hollywood Dream - The Ride", and "Hollywood Dream - The Ride: Backdrop".

Additionally, the show-type attractions are "Shrek’s 4-D Adventure", "Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic", "SING on Tour", "Playing with Curious George", and "Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show".

Hollywood Dream - The Ride

"Hollywood Dream - The Ride" and "Hollywood Dream - The Ride: Backdrop" are roller coaster-type attractions. They reach a maximum height of 43m and a top speed of 89km/h, racing through the park in all directions. One unique feature is the ability to choose your own background music and listen to it while riding. Notably, the "Backdrop" version runs the same course but in reverse.

Both entrances are the same, but there is a branch point in the middle of the line to decide which one to get on. There are many cases where the waiting time is long due to the smaller number of backdrops.

Space Fantasy - The Ride

"Space Fantasy - The Ride" is a roller coaster-type attraction that offers an experience of traveling through the starry expanse of outer space. The four-passenger vehicle not only moves at high speeds along the track but also rotates unexpectedly and moves in reverse directions, making for unpredictable movements.

The facility of "Space Fantasy The Ride" is often used as an "XR Ride" wearing VR goggles, and there are not many opportunities to use "Space Fantasy The Ride" itself in recent years. In the past, the "XR Ride", which collaborated with popular works such as the following, was available as a limited-time attraction. Please note that height restrictions may be changed for "XR Ride".

Shrek’s 4-D Adventure/Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic

"Shrek’s 4-D Adventure" and "Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic" are show-type attractions where you sit in a theater and watch using 3D glasses. They alternate screenings at the same location. In the "Shrek" show, you embark on an adventure with Shrek and Donkey. In the "Sesame Street" show, you dive into the sea and fly in the sky with characters like Elmo and Cookie Monster.

In the past, 4D movies that collaborated with popular works such as the following were screened for a limited time.

SING on Tour

"SING on Tour" is a live musical show attraction featuring characters from the movie "SING", such as Ash, Johnny, Gunter, Rosita, and Meena. You watch while seated in a theater. Instead of just a screen presentation, they deliver powerful songs and dances in the real world, giving you the feeling of being immersed in the world of the movie.

Playing with Curious George

"Playing with Curious George" is a show attraction that utilizes projection technology, allowing you to feel as if the animated George and real people are in the same space together. Effects, such as drawers moving in sync with George's actions and soap bubbles flying, are added to enhance the feeling that George is truly present.

The front area of the stage is designated as a kids' zone, where children can enjoy without sitting in chairs. Additionally, photography and video recording are permitted as long as no flash is used.

Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show

"Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Sho" is a live rock and roll performance featuring characters from the movie "Beetlejuice" as well as familiar monsters like Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein. As the show consists of popular songs, it allows the audience to unite and get pumped up together.

The monsters that appear in the show can look quite scary, so younger children might get frightened. Additionally, photography and video recording are permitted as long as no flash is used.

Shop&Restaurant

The Hollywood area, being near the entrance, features a series of large shops under a massive canopy, making it convenient for visitors to buy souvenirs right before exiting the park. The largest shop in the park, "Universal Studios Store", and the select shop "Beverly Hills Gifts", where you can easily spot seasonal and latest items, are located here.

Additionally, specialty shops line the streets, including "It's Soooo Fluffy!" for Fluffy merchandise, "Hello Kitty Design Studio" for Hello Kitty products, "Characters 4 U" for Sesame Street goods, and "Peanuts Corner Store" for Peanuts merchandise.

There's the "Mario Cafe & Store" where you can enjoy drinks and food themed around Mario, the "Mel’s Drive-In" restaurant that lets you dive into the world of American Graffiti, the "Beverly Hills Boulangerie" cafe offering sandwiches and sweets, and the "Studio Stars Restaurant" which is convenient for dining with kids.

Additionally, right after entering from the entrance, coin lockers are located on the immediate right. If you have large baggage, feel free to use them.

New York Area

The attractions in the New York Area include "The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 4K3D - The Ride".

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 4K3D - The Ride

"The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 4K3D - The Ride" is a ride-type attraction where you put on 3D glasses, board a vehicle, and enjoy immersive visuals while moving through a course. The 3D imagery, synchronized with the movement of the vehicle, combined with over 100 special effects like water and hot wind, gives you a sensation as if it's genuinely happening in the real world.

Additionally, it has been decided that "The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 4K3D - The Ride" will close on January 22, 2024.

In the New York area, there is an "The Amazing Spider-Man Photo Opportunity" where you can take a commemorative photo with a hanging Spider-Man.

Terminator 2:3-D

"Terminator 2:3-D" closed on September 14, 2020.

"Terminator 2:3-D" is a show-type attraction where you wear 3D glasses and watch from your seat inside a theater. Combining live action and 3D imagery, it delivers an intense experience of the battle between humans and machines.

There was a limited-time collaboration using this facility with the popular series "Attack on Tita"n, known as "Attack on Titan: The Real".

Shop&Restaurant

There is a shop with a collection of Spider-Man merchandise named "The Amazing Spider-Man Store" and a shop that handles popular park merchandise called "Universal Studios Souvenirs".

Within the area, there are five restaurants: a meat-centric eatery "Park Side Grille", a Japanese cuisine restaurant "SAIDO", a Western-style dining place "Finnegan’s Bar & Grill", a pasta and pizza restaurant "Azzurra di Capri", and a pizza-specialty shop "Louie’s N.Y. Pizza Parlor".

At times, "SAIDO" operates as a limited-time restaurant in conjunction with events. During our visit, it was operating as "Toritsu Jujutsu Kousen Cafeteria," collaborating with the popular series "Jujutsu Kaisen."

Minion Park

In Minion Park, there are two attractions: "Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem" and "Freeze Ray Sliders". Additionally, within Minion Park, Minions occasionally make appearances for "Minions Greeting", where they perform songs and dances, and guests have the opportunity to take photos with them.

Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem

The "Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem" is a ride-style attraction where guests board a vehicle that moves in all directions while enjoying powerful visuals displayed on a massive dome screen. Utilizing Hybrid 5D technology, guests can experience three-dimensional visuals without the need for 3D glasses. Please enjoy the chaotic world of the Minions. Note that the actual ride duration is approximately 3 minutes.

Freeze Ray Sliders

"Freeze Ray Sliders" is a ride-style attraction where guests board unpredictable-moving vehicles on an ice rink that has mysteriously appeared due to the Minions. The ten vehicles slide and rotate on the ice, narrowly avoiding collisions with each other, offering an exciting and thrilling experience.

Minions Greeting

In "Minions Greeting", minions appear in the minion park. They may take pictures with you or put on a simple show.

Shop&Restaurant

There are three shops in Minion Park, such as "Sweet Surrender", which sells minion-shaped sweets, and "Fun Store", which sells minion-related goods. Also, "Delicious Me! The Cookie Kitchen" sells minion-shaped cookies and ice cream.

Space Killer/Banana Cabana

In Minion Park, you can play the "Space Killer" game, the same game that the three sisters from the "Despicable Me" movie series attempted (for a fee). If you can knock down all six cans on the table with projectiles launched from a bazooka, you succeed. Just like in the movie, winners can get a fluffy unicorn plush toy.

Next to "Space Killer", there's another game called "Banana Cabana" (for a fee) where you hit bananas with a hammer. If you manage to get the launched banana into the coconut, you succeed.

San Francisco Area

There are currently no attractions in the San Francisco area.

Backdraft

"Backdraft" closed on September 14, 2020.

"Backdraft" is a walk-through attraction where visitors move through three areas, experiencing the world of the movie "Backdraft", which depicts the heroics of firefighters. In the final area, the massive fire scene from the movie is recreated, allowing visitors to witness the intense flames and powerful effects firsthand.

In 2023, a limited-time event was held in collaboration with the popular work "SPY×FAMILY" titled "SPY×FAMILY Secret Mission". Those who successfully completed this mission earned the right to participate in the ending show. This ending show took place in the "Backdraft" facility, which has since closed.

Shop&Restaurant

There is a shop "San Francisco Candies" that deals with Minion & Tim goods.

There is "The Dragon’s Pearl" Chinese restaurant, "HAPPINESS CAFE" with minion burger plate and minion fried chicken plate, and "Wharf Cafe" for drinks and light meals.

In addition, "Lombard’s Landing" is not currently open as usual, but is open as a limited-time restaurant linked to seasonal events and attractions. At the time of my visit, "Sanji's Pirates Restaurant", a collaboration with the popular work "ONE PIECE", was being held. Only those with pre-lottery or general sale tickets will be admitted.

Jurassic Park

The attractions in the Jurassic Park include "The Flying Dinosaur" and "Jurassic Park - The Ride". In addition, "Jurassic Park Dinosaur Meet & Greet", where dinosaurs appear in Jurassic Park, is also being held.

The Flying Dinosaur

"The Flying Dinosaur" is a roller coaster-type attraction. During the ride, passengers are suspended face-down, creating the sensation of soaring through the sky as if being carried by a Pteranodon. The course has significant height variations and numerous twists, offering an incredibly thrilling experience.

Jurassic Park - The Ride

"Jurassic Park - The Ride" is an attraction where guests board boat-style vehicles and journey through the world of Jurassic Park inhabited by dinosaurs. The first part of the ride allows you to calmly observe the dinosaurs in their habitat, but the atmosphere shifts dramatically in the latter half when carnivorous dinosaurs make their appearance. The climax is a thrilling drop from a height of 26 meters (about 85 feet).

It's worth noting that there's a good chance of getting wet on this attraction, so if needed, consider purchasing a poncho on-site (or you can bring your own).

"Jurassic Park - The Ride" will be unavailable for a long time from September 4, 2023 due to large-scale renovations.

Jurassic Park Dinosaur Meet & Greet

"Jurassic Park Dinosaur Meet & Greet" allows you to see and even touch moving dinosaurs up close. While they might look intimidating, they don't exhibit any scary behaviors, making it suitable even for young children. This activity takes place in a predetermined circular plaza.

Shop&Restaurant

There is a shop "Jurassic Outfitters" that deals with goods related to Jurassic World.

There is "Discovery Restaurant", which reproduces the visitor center that appeared in the movie "Jurassic Park", "Lost World Restaurant" where you can enjoy tropical-style meals, and "Fossil Fuels" for drinks and light meals.

At the time of my visit, the "Discovery Restaurant" was holding the "Straw Hat Crew's Feast Restaurant", a collaboration with the popular work "ONE PIECE".

Amity Village

The attractions in the Amity Village include "JAWS".

JAWS

"JAWS" is a ride-type attraction where you board a boat-style vehicle and travel over water to experience the world of the movie "JAWS". The first half of the ride allows for a leisurely river tour while listening to the fun commentary from the on-board crew. However, the atmosphere changes when a gigantic shark makes its appearance. With flames rising and the enormous shark attacking right in front of you, it's packed with thrills.

Do note that depending on where you sit, you might get slightly wet, so if necessary, consider purchasing a poncho on-site (or you can bring your own).

※ There is no height restriction if accompanied by an attendant, but small children must be able to sit on their own.

Shop&Restaurant

There is a shop "Amity Island Gifts" that deals with goods related to Jaws.

There is "Amity Landing Restaurant" with a shipyard motif, "Amity Ice Cream", a 31 ice cream shop, and "Boardwalk Snacks" for drinks and light meals.

WaterWorld

The attractions in the WaterWorld include "WaterWorld".

WaterWorld

"Waterworld" is an action-packed show set in the expansive outdoor theater, based on the world of the movie "Waterworld". Audience members watch the show seated. In a world where dry land has disappeared, the show features high-speed jet skis, flashy stunts using airplanes, lively commentary from the performers, and impressive stunts, making it a highlight-packed experience.

Depending on where you sit, you might get significantly wet, even to the point of being drenched. (Seats are color-coded to indicate this). If you think you might need it, consider purchasing a poncho on-site (or you can bring your own).

Universal Wonderland

Universal Wonderland is an area that small children can enjoy. There are many ride-type attractions and show-style attractions.

The Flying Snoopy

"The Flying Snoopy" is an attraction where you can ride a Snoopy-shaped two-seater coaster and control the ascent and descent yourself.

Snoopy's Sound Stage Adventure

"Snoopy's Sound Stage Adventure" is an indoor playland. Various games related to Snoopy are prepared.

Hello Kitty's Cupcake Dream

"Hello Kitty's Cupcake Dream" is a coffee cup-type attraction where you ride on a cupcake-shaped vehicle and enjoy rotating the cup by operating the steering wheel. The capacity of one cup is 5 people.

Hello Kitty's Ribbon Collection

"Hello Kitty's Ribbon Collection" is an attraction where you can take a picture with Hello Kitty after viewing the latest Hello Kitty fashion collection displayed in the room.

Big Bird's Big Top Circus

"Big Bird's Big Top Circus" is a merry-go-round type attraction. The capacity is 71 people.

Elmo's Little Drive

"Elmo's Little Drive" is an attraction where you drive a car designed by Elmo and drive around a loop course. There is an age limit.

※ Children over 6 years old should use "Sesame's Big Drive".

Sesame's Big Drive

"Sesame's Big Drive" is an attraction where you drive a car and drive a course where you can freely choose your destination. There is an age limit.

※ Children under the age of 6 should use "Elmo's Little Drive".

Elmo's Go-Go Skateboard

"Elmo's Go-Go Skateboard" is a ride-type attraction where you can enjoy the thrill of riding a huge skateboard that moves unpredictably.

Moppy's Balloon Trip

"Moppy's Balloon Trip" is a ride-type attraction where you can ride a gondola and enjoy the view from the sky. The capacity of one gondola is 4 people.

Elmo's Bubble Bubble

"Elmo's Bubble Bubble" is a ride-type attraction that travels on water in a small boat. It is located in the indoor facility "Elmo's Imagination Playland".

Moppy's Lucky Dance Party

"Moppy's Lucky Dance Party" is an attraction where you can have a dance party with Moppy and his sister. It is located in the indoor facility "Elmo's Imagination Playland". There is no age limit, but we assume that children under the age of 12 are recommended.

Elmo's Imagination Playland

Inside the indoor facility "Elmo's Imagination Playland", there are also play equipment facilities such as "Abby's Magical Party", "Grover's Construction Company", "Bert and Ernie's Wonder: The Sea", and "Big Bird's Big Nest".

There are no age or height restrictions for any of them (there are recommended ages for each).

Cookie Monster Slide

"Cookie Monster Slide" is an attraction where you can play on a large tongue-shaped slide stretched out by Cookie Monster. There is no age limit, but we assume that children between the ages of 3 and 9 are recommended.

Abby's Magical Tree

"Abby's Magical Tree" is an attraction where you play on a jungle gym built in a large tree. There is no age limit, but we assume that children between the ages of 6 and 12 are recommended.

Ernie's Rubber Duckie Race

"Ernie's Rubber Duckie Race" is a water play attraction using ducks. It is a success if you can bring the duck to the top and flow to the end. There is no age limit, but we assume that children between the ages of 3 and 6 are recommended.

Shop&Restaurant

There are Snoopy and Peanuts shop "Snoopy Studios Store", Hello Kitty goods shop "Hello Kitty's Ribbon Boutique", and Sesame Street friends shop "Sesame Street Kids Store".

There is "Snoopy’s Backlot Cafe" with plenty of meals for children, and "Hello Kitty's Corner Cafe" with drinks and snacks.

THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER

In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, there are two attractions: "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" and "Flight of the Hippogriff". Additionally, you can experience the event of "the wand choosing the wizard" at "Ollivanders", and perform actual magic spells using the "Magical Wand" in the "Wand Magic" experience.

Moreover, on the outdoor stage within the area, various shows take place: the magic practice scene "Wand Studies" performed by students from the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the harmonious singing by the school students known as the "Frog Choir", and the performance "Triwizard Spirit Rally" by Durmstrang and Beauxbatons, two of the three major wizarding schools.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

"Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" is a ride-type attraction that combines a ride moving in all directions - up, down, left, and right - with the powerful imagery of the latest 4K & 3D technology, immersing guests into the world of Harry Potter. Together with Harry, guests soar above Hogwarts Castle, joining Ron and Hermione to confront dragons, spiders, Dementors, and more. The various mechanisms within the Hogwarts Castle that replicate the world of the film, which guests encounter on the way to the ride, are a must-see.

Flight of the Hippogriff

"Flight of the Hippogriff" is a roller coaster-type attraction where you ride a Hippogriff and soar through the sky. The movement isn't intense, and the speed is relatively gentle, making it a ride that families can comfortably enjoy together. Along the path to the ride, you'll see Hagrid's hut and a pumpkin patch.

Ollivanders

"Ollivanders" is a show-type attraction where guests can experience the scene from the movie "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" where Harry purchases his wand. The left side of Ollivanders serves as the waiting line. About 20 to 30 guests at a time are admitted into the shop, and from among them, one person is chosen to either experience or watch the spectacle of a wand choosing its owner.

About the magic wand

Even if you don't participate in the "Ollivanders" attraction, you can still purchase a magic wand. To the right of Ollivanders is "Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment". Upon entering, it connects to Ollivanders where wands can be purchased.

There are two types of wands: those that can be used for "Wand Magic" and regular wands. If you wish to perform "Wand Magic", please purchase the type of wand called a "Magical Wand" which has a sensor at the tip. (Various types are available for each.)

When you purchase a Magical Wand, it comes with a map for use in Wand Magic.

Wand Magic

"Wand Magic" is an attraction where you can experience casting actual spells using the magical wand called "Magical Wand." When you purchase the Magical Wand, refer to the map included to visit designated spots in Hogsmeade village and try waving the wand while saying the spell. If successful, magic will be activated and various wondrous things will occur.

The map provides details on where you can cast spells, the incantations, and how to wave the wand. For information on how to purchase the Magical Wand type of wand, please refer to the "Ollivanders" attraction location.

Outdoor Stage

The outdoor stage hosts a show by the students of the Magic School.

Limited time shows may also be held. At the time of my visit, a "Hippogriff Magical Lesson" was being held.

Shop&Restaurant

In Hogsmeade village, you can find the prank shop "Zonko's Joke Shop", the magical instrument shop "Dervish and Banges" which sells items like "Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder" and the "Spectrespecs", the sweet shop "Honeydukes" that offers "Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans" and "Chocolate Frogs", the post and stationery shop "Owl Post & Owlery", the women's fashion items shop "Gladrags Wizardwear" with costumes and accessories, the magical equipment store "Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment" selling robes, scarves, and other items, "Filch's Emporium of Confiscated Goods" which offers film props and Hogwarts school-related items, and the magical wand shop "Ollivanders".

There's also the longstanding pub and inn-styled restaurant "Three Broomsticks", the pub next to it "Hog's Head", and the "The Magic Neep Cart" for drinks and snacks. From the terrace of "Three Broomsticks", you can get a view of Hogwarts Castle.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

The attractions in the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD include "Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge" and "Yoshi's Adventure". Additionally, there is the "Power-Up Band Key Challenges", an attraction that utilizes the Power-Up Band.

Power-Up Band

The Power-Up Band is a wristband sold at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Possessing a Power-Up Band enhances the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD experience.

You can enjoy "Mario Kart" and "Yoshi's Adventure" even without the Power-Up Band. However, in "Yoshi's Adventure", you can collect stamps with the Power-Up Band, and in "Mario Kart", you can collect stamps and coins.

Furthermore, to hit the numerous blocks throughout SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, clear mini-games, and collect coins or stamps, you'll need the Power-Up Band. It's essential for participating in the "Power-Up Band Key Challenges".

To fully enjoy SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, we recommend getting a Power-Up Band.

Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge

"Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge" is a ride-type attraction where you can don the AR goggles and immerse yourself in the world of Mario Kart. While the kart does move, it doesn't undergo rapid accelerations or violent motions. During the race, you'll maneuver the steering wheel while watching the images displayed on the AR goggles, try to hit the opposing team with shells, and collect coins to beat Team Koopa.

Yoshi's Adventure

"Yoshi's Adventure" is a ride-type attraction where you embark on a quest to find three eggs, relying on Captain Toad's map while seated in a two-person vehicle shaped like Yoshi. The vehicle moves very slowly along a predetermined path, making it a safe and enjoyable experience even for young children.

You are allowed to take pictures during the ride of "Yoshi's Adventure". Take pictures of familiar characters on the course and the world of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Power-Up Band Key Challenges

"Power-Up Band Key Challenges" is an attraction where you can challenge 5 mini games in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and collect at least 3 keys to have a final battle with Bowser Jr. Power up bands are required for this attraction.

The Key Challenge mini-game is located between the entrance to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and Mario Kart.

If you can collect 3 keys, you can enter the room for the final battle with Koopa Jr.

There is a Mario Kart goods shop "MARIO MOTORS" and a cute souvenir shop "1UP FACTORY" from the Mushroom Kingdom.
