The Osu Shopping District is a large-scale shopping district located south of the Sakae area in the center of Nagoya. It stretches from Osu Station to Kamimaezu Station. With about 1,200 diverse stores, it is popular for its eateries where you can enjoy food while walking around. Close to Osu Kannon and the Osu Engeijo, which attracts entertainers from east and west, the area hosts various annual events. Especially popular are the Osu Summer Festival in summer and the Osu Daido Chonin Festival in October, enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike.

What is Osu shopping district?

The Osu Shopping District is located in the area surrounded by Wakamiya Odori, Fushimi Dori, Osu Dori, and Minami-Otsu Dori in Osu 2-chome to 3-chome, Naka Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, situated south of Nagoya's central Sakae area. Stretching from Osu Station to Kamimaezu Station, accessible in 10 minutes by subway from Nagoya Station, this extensive shopping street comprises Osukannon Dori, Osu Hon Dori, Nio-mon Dori, Monzen-machi Dori, Akamon Dori, Man-sho-ji Dori, Higashi Nio-mon Dori, and Shintenchi Dori.

Eating and Walking through Osu Shopping Street

While there are many dine-in restaurants in Osu Shopping Street, there are also numerous takeout options, making it a great place to enjoy eating while walking around. Here are some of the shops where you can enjoy this experience.

There's "Gin no An," a taiyaki shop. They offer taiyaki with a crispy thin crust filled generously with sweet bean paste. Next door, there is also a famous takoyaki chain, "Gindako." Located on Osu Niomon-dori.

There's "Shin Suzume Honpo," known for kinako dango and mitarashi dango. It is also located on Osu Niomon-dori.

"TOP'S POPCORN" is a popcorn specialty store located on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

"Vietnam Kitchen" is a Vietnamese restaurant, also on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

"Osso Brazil" is a Brazilian eatery. Their specialty is "whole roasted chicken," and you can enjoy various ethnic dishes. Located on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

You can enjoy Taiwanese fried chicken at "Li-san no Taiwan Meibutsu Yatai." The main store is on Higashi-Niomon-dori, and there is another branch on Banshoji-dori.

"Nouka-no Yaki-imo Sweets Recolte Osu" is a shop where you can enjoy various dishes made with baked sweet potatoes. Located on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

"Naruto Taiyaki Honpo" is a taiyaki specialty shop, also on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

"Gochisou Yaki-Musubi Onimaru" is a specialty onigiri shop. They offer yaki-onigiri and pork miso soup. Located on Banshoji-dori.

"Suzuki Shoten" is a restaurant specializing in okonomiyaki and yakisoba, located on Banshoji-dori. This time I enjoyed yakisoba inside the shop.

"Waffle Khan" is a specialty waffle store. Waffle Khan has expanded to 190 stores in South Korea. It is located on Banshoji-dori.

"Mega Kebab" is a store where you can get chicken roll kebabs and stretchy Turkish ice cream. In addition to being on Osu Kannon-dori, there is another branch on Higashi-Niomon-dori.

"Huang Bai Bai" is a Taiwanese castella specialty store. It is located just beyond Akamon-dori on Shintenchi-dori.

"En Shi Da Ji Pai" is a Taiwanese fried chicken specialty store, also located just beyond Akamon-dori on Shintenchi-dori.

"Kanmadan" is a restaurant where you can enjoy Korean street food. It's located on Shintenchi-dori.

While I have mainly introduced shops located on the main street this time, there are also several shops just a step away from the main street in the side alleys. Take some time to explore and find delicious eateries.

There are many clothing stores in Osu Shopping Street. Each store is brimming with its own unique personality.

As I wandered around Osu Shopping Street, I noticed quite a few maid cafes.

Komehyo, Japan's largest recycling shop, has its main store in Osu.

In Ame-Yoko Building, there used to be many stores selling electronic parts, computers, and electrical appliances, but now, in addition to similar stores, you will also find shops related to fashion and entertainment.

There are many other types of shops in Osu Shopping Street as well.

Banshoji Temple

On Shintenchi-dori, there is Banshoji Temple. It was established in 1540 by Oda Nobuhide, the father of Oda Nobunaga, as the family temple of the Oda clan. Initially, it was located south of Nagoya Castle. The infamous incident where Oda Nobunaga appeared at his father's funeral in an inappropriate manner and threw incense at the memorial tablet occurred at this Banshoji Temple. Later, with the construction of Nagoya Castle, it was relocated to its current location.

Osu Kannon Temple

Osu Kannon is a temple located in Osu, Nagoya City. Founded in 1333, its formal name is Kitano-san Shimpuku-ji Hosho-in, but it is commonly known as Osu Kannon. Osu Kannon, a Kannon pilgrimage site, is said to be one of Japan's three major Kannon temples.

Osu Engeijo

The Osu Engeijo is about a 5-minute walk from the Osu shopping district. It is a place where you can enjoy comedy in Nagoya as a vaudeville venue where entertainers from the East and West as well as local entertainers gather.

Osu Daidochonin Matsuri

In the Osu Shopping District, the Osu Daidochonin Matsuri is held every October, where street performers showcase their proud skills. The highlight of the festival, the "Oiran Dochu" parade, is also a must-see.

Atsuta Shrine
Atsuta Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Atsuta Shrine was founded in the year 113, making it about 1900 years old. It is known for housing the Kusanagi Sword (also called Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi), one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. The shrine complex includes a treasure hall that stores about 6,000 artifacts, a large camphor tree said to be over 1,000 years old, and the Nobunaga Fence, which was donated by Oda Nobunaga as a token of gratitude for his victory in the Battle of Okehazama.

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a municipal zoo and botanical garden located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It opened in 1937. Within the grounds, there are not only a zoo and botanical garden but also an amusement park, a natural animal museum, a world medaka museum, an petting zoo, and an observation deck called the Higashiyama Sky Tower. In addition to its convenient location just a few minutes' walk from the subway station, admission is free for junior high school students and younger, making it a popular spot for families.

LEGOLAND Japan
LEGOLAND Japan is a LEGO brick-themed amusement park located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The rides and attractions within the park are designed to resemble structures made out of LEGO bricks. Additionally, numerous objects created from LEGO bricks are installed throughout the park. Adjacent to the park are SEA LIFE Nagoya, an aquarium facility, and the LEGOLAND Japan Hotel, which offers accommodation.

SCMAGLEV and Railway Park
The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park, operated by JR Central, is a railway museum located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Inside the museum, a wide range of vehicles are on display, from steam locomotives to actual conventional and Shinkansen vehicles, and even the superconducting maglev. Additionally, visitors can experience train driving simulators and view railway dioramas.
