Higashiyama Zoo is broadly divided into the Main Zoo and the North Zoo. In the Main Zoo, you can see various animals such as lions, giraffes, Asian elephants, penguins, koalas, red pandas, and Sumatran tigers. In this article, we will introduce the highlights of Higashiyama Main Zoo.

How to enter Higashiyama Zoo Main Park
To visit the Main Zoo, it is convenient to enter through the main gate, which leads directly to it.
Skyview Train
Just to the left as you enter the main gate, you will find the Skyview Train Main Gate Station. The Skyview Train has two stations: the Main Gate Station and the Botanical Garden Station. It is convenient to use when moving from the main gate to the botanical garden, and vice versa.
Let's actually take a ride from the Botanical Garden Station. The Skyview Train rattles and shakes a bit while moving. Since it traverses through the zoo, you can view the zoo from a slightly elevated position while on board.
Animal Pavilion
Immediately to the right after entering through the main gate, you will find the Animal Pavilion. The pavilion features panel displays and a library related to animals.
There is also a diorama where you can observe a scene of a lion hunting a zebra.
Indian Rhinoceros
This is the Indian Rhinoceros House.
Asian Elephant
This is the Asian Elephant House (Zoojium), which opened in September 2013.
The Asian Elephant House is a two-story building, allowing you to observe from an elevated position.
Note that outside the Asian Elephant House, a memorial monument of the elephant train is displayed.
Small-Clawed Otter
This is a small-clawed otter house.
Chital Deer
This is the chital deer house.
Kangaroo and wallaby
This is Kangaroo and wallaby house. Red kangaroos and Bennett's red-necked wallabies are kept here.

This is Red kangaroo.
Bennett's red-necked wallaby
This is Bennett's red-necked wallaby.
Zebra
This is Chapman's Zebra House.
Lion
Here is the Lion House. When the lions are outside, you can see them up close through the glass.
If it's hard to see through the glass, there are times when you can get a better view from outside.
When the lions are not outside, you can see them from behind the breeding area.
Red Panda
This is the Red Panda House, which opened in January 2021. Red pandas are being housed here. The Red Panda House allows you to observe the red pandas from three locations: outside, inside the building, and behind the building.
Flamingo
This is the Flamingo House (Ancient Pond). Two types of flamingos, the Chilean Flamingo and the Red Flamingo, are being bred here. Within the same enclosure, there are also Wild Geese and Bean Geese.
White Pelican
This is a white pelican house.
Dinosaur
A huge dinosaur is on display near the flamingo house and bear house.
Sumatran Tiger
This is the Sumatran Tiger House. It is located within the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Area," which opened in July 2023. You can view them both indoors and outdoors.
Sumatran Orangutan
This is the Sumatran Orangutan House. Like the Sumatran Tiger House, it is located within the "Asian Tropical Rainforest Area" and opened in July 2023. You can observe them in both indoor and outdoor areas.
Carnivorous Small Mammal House
This is the Carnivorous Small Mammal House. Snow leopards, Pallas's cats, and honey badgers are among the animals being kept here.
Jaguar
This is a Jaguar, it will be moving to the new Jaguar House, which is scheduled to open at the end of October 2023.
Serval
This is a Serval.
Snow leopard
This is a snow leopard.
Jungle cat
This is a Jungle cat.
Raccoon
This is a Raccoon.
Fennec fox
This is a Fennec fox.
Manul cat
This is a Manul cat.
Ratel
This is Ratel.
Fishing cat
This is a Fishing cat.
Bear
This is the Bear House. In the Bear House, Malayan bears, Japanese black bears, spectacled bears, and Ezo brown bears are kept in sequence. You can view the bears through the glass on the first floor, and you can also look down from the second floor.

This is a Malayan bear.
Japanese black bear
This is a Japanese black bear.
Ezo brown bear
This is a Ezo brown bear.
Giraffe
This is a Reticulated giraffe house.
Koala
This is a Koala house.
On the wall of the Koala House, a koala mark designed by Akira Toriyama, a cartoonist from the local area, is displayed.
Bird Hall
This is the Bird Hall. You can see many birds here. Parrots are kept in cages, while many other birds are allowed to roam freely.
This is a Violet macaw.
This is a Red macaw.
While many birds were free-flying inside the Bird Hall, as of October 2023, due to the impact of bird flu, there were hardly any birds present, with the exception of peacocks.
Penguin
This is a penguin house. You can see Humboldt penguins and northern rockhopper penguins.
Harbor Seal
This is a harbor seal house.
California Sea Lion
This is a California sea lion house.
Polar Bear
This is a polar bear house.
Emu
This is an Emu house.
Small Parakeet House
This is a small parakeet house. A variety of parrots are bred here.

Wattled Crane
This is the wattled crane house.
Children's Zoo
This is a children's zoo. You can see familiar animals such as goats, sheep, and horses right in front of your eyes.

This is a forest of small birds and squirrels.

This is a Japanese animal house and raccoon dog village. You can see foxes, raccoon dogs, badgers, and more.

You can also see Japanese Raccoon dogs at Raccoon dog village, which is nearby.
Japanese macaque
This is Japanese macaque house.
