Complete guide to the highlights of Higashiyama Zoo North Park

Higashiyama Zoo is broadly divided into the Main Zoo and the North Zoo. In the North Zoo, you can see various animals like Western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, forest wolves, hippos, and prairie dogs. Additionally, there is a Natural Animal Museum where you can observe nocturnal animals and reptiles, as well as a museum showcasing medaka from around the world. In this article, we will introduce the highlights of the Higashiyama Zoo's North Garden.

How to enter Higashiyama Zoo North Park
To visit the North Zoo, it's convenient to enter through the North Gate.
If you enter through the Main Gate, there are stairs to the left after a short walk that lead to the North Zoo. Additionally, there are stairs near the Carnivorous Small Mammal House that also lead to the North Zoo.
Western gorilla
This is the Gorilla & Chimpanzee House, where Western gorillas and chimpanzees are housed.
The Western lowland gorillas may be indoors or outdoors. "Shabani" became famous as the handsome gorilla.
Chimpanzee
Similarly to the Western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees are also housed in the Gorilla & Chimpanzee House. The chimpanzees may be indoors or outdoors at different times.
Pygmy hippopotamus
This is a pygmy hippopotamus house.
Black rhinoceros
This is a black rhinoceros house.
Hippopotamus
This is a hippopotamus house.
African Elephant
This is a African Elephant House. Since Kenny, who was being kept here, passed away in August 2020, it is currently vacant.
The next two pictures are of Kenny, taken in 2019.
On the wall of the African Elephant House, there is a mural of animals. This mural was created using 330,000 tiles and involved the participation of 3,000 citizens. The original design was handled by Tatsuya Egawa, a cartoonist from the local area, and models animals that were actually at the Higashiyama Zoo at the time of production.
Siamang
This is a Siamang House. Until March 2010, golden snub-nosed monkeys were kept here.
Monkey house
This is a monkey house. A variety of monkeys are bred here.

This is a bird of prey. You can see eagles and condors.

This is a pheasant and crane house. You can see birds such as pheasants and cranes.

Prairie dog
This is a black-tailed prairie dog house.
Eastern wolf
This is Eastern wolf House.
American bison

This is American beaver house.
Capybara
This is a capybara house.
Giant anteater
This is a giant anteater house.
Japanese giant salamander
This is a japanese giant salamander house.

This is a jaguar house.
World Medaka Museum
This is the world's medaka museum. Many medaka and small fish are bred here.
